South Dormer Window Refurbishment completed
Published: September, 2023
Flush with the fundraising success of the Big Bash, the photos below show some work that was completed recently to the dormer window on the south side of the nave roof. These show quite well how the community has got behind our efforts to preserve this historic building at the centre of our village.
This and the similar window on the north side of the roof was added in 1641 to give light to a new singer’s gallery that used to sit high up at the west end of the nave. After 259 years of service (blink of an eye in the history of our church), the gallery was removed in 1900 but a dated beam is preserved in the parsonage barn.
As can be seen, the timbers of the window and its supporting structure were in a very poor state but are now fully restored. The scarf jointing connecting the new to the old is an exquisite piece of craftsmanship, angled down and out to allow any water ingress to run away from the joint.
